A California court has issued a restraining order against the president of the Service Employees International Union, Andrew Stern, over allegations that SEIU members stalked and physically assaulted members of another union.

The restraining order, signed Tuesday, was sought by the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, an 80,000-member group affiliated with the AFL-CIO. Mr. Stern and SEIU are to appear in court on May 1.

The union of nurses alleged that SEIU members have been harassing its members. Last weekend, they said, SEIU members stormed a labor conference in Dearborn, Mich., injuring several members of the union of nurses during a scuffle in the lobby of a hotel.

SEIU officials disputed that account, but they acknowledged that a skirmish took place. According to their version, 800 members — mostly women — showed up at the conference for a peaceful protest.
