Nurses rally in Chicago for right to unionize
By Associated Press August 8, 2006
Hundreds of nurses rallied in Chicago today to support their right to unionize, and organizers say more protests are planned.
More than 200 people attended the National Nurses Organizing Committee rally in the city's Loop this afternoon. They briefly stopped traffic when about two dozen protesters sat down in the street, but no arrests were made.
They're upset about a pending National Labor Relations Board ruling that could classify nurses as supervisors, making them ineligible to join a union.
Protesters carried signs with slogans such as "Super nurses, yes. Supervisors, no."
Rally leader Rose Ann DeMoro says today's protest showed that nurses are willing to stand up for their patients. And she says more rallies are planned.
